What is outdoor play and learning good for? Absolutely everything!
If you’re looking for a way to spark your child’s imagination, resilience, and love of learning, look no further than Forest School with Beautiful New Beginnings. We are so proud and passionate of our outdoor sessions which transform woodlands into dynamic classrooms or playgrounds where children of all ages discover the boundless possibilities of nature.
What Is Forest School?
Forest School is an internationally recognised approach to outdoor education that emphasises child-led exploration, hands-on activities, and respectful engagement with the natural world. Unlike traditional playgrounds or structured sports, Forest School encourages:
Risk-Assessed Challenges: Children learn to judge and manage safe risks - like balancing on logs or using simple hand tools - in a supervised environment.
Open-Ended Play: With sticks, stones, and leaves as their “materials,” kids invent games, build dens, and solve problems creatively.
Long-Term Relationships: Regular attendance helps children form deep bonds with the forest setting and with their peers, fostering a sense of belonging.
Parent Insight: “Our son used to shy away from new activities. After just ONE Forest School sessions, he was leading group projects and confidently climbing trees! It's done wonders for his confidence and imagination”
The Transformative Benefits of Outdoor Learning
1. Physical Development
Gross Motor Skills: Climbing, running, and balancing build strength, coordination, and spatial awareness.
Fine Motor Skills: Tasks like weaving with grass or screwing together wooden blocks enhance dexterity.
2. Emotional Resilience
Safe Risk-Taking: Learning to navigate minor challenges fosters independence and self-confidence.
Stress Reduction: Natural settings have been shown to lower cortisol levels, supporting mental wellbeing.
3. Social & Communication Skills
Team Projects: Children collaborate on shelter building, problem-solve as a group, and negotiate roles.
Empathy & Leadership: Caring for mini-ecosystems and taking turns with tools encourages responsibility and kindness.
4. Cognitive Growth
Problem-Solving: Open-ended activities nurture strategic thinking and adaptability.
Curiosity & Science Learning: Identifying plants, observing wildlife, and understanding seasonal changes bring science to life.
Wellbeing Impact Study: A 2021 study found that children who attended weekly Forest School sessions showed a huge increase in self-esteem and a reduction in anxiety compared to peers in traditional play settings.
