Level One Forest School 

Our Level 1 Award in Forest School Ethos and Principles is a nationally recognised qualification designed to introduce you to the key concepts behind Forest School. This three day course is perfect for anyone interested in nature-based learning, child development, and outdoor education.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The history and principles of Forest School

  • The benefits of outdoor play and holistic learning

  • The role of the adult in a Forest School setting

  • Basic safety and risk awareness outdoors

  • A taster of practical Forest School activities (e.g., shelter building, natural crafts)

Course Overview
Our Level 3 Certificate in Forest School Programme Leadership is the nationally recognised qualification that enables you to become a fully qualified Forest School Leader. This in-depth course is ideal for practitioners who want to design, deliver, and lead Forest School programmes with confidence, creativity, and a deep understanding of child-led outdoor learning.

Greenslate Community Farm provides the perfect backdrop for immersive, nature-based training—combining sustainable farming, wildlife, and real-life Forest School settings.

Who is this course for?

  • Outdoor learning professionals and Forest School assistants

  • Anyone passionate about leading outdoor education and supporting holistic child development

What You’ll Learn:

  • Forest School philosophy, principles, and child development theories

  • Planning, delivering, and evaluating a full Forest School programme

  • Sustainable use of woodlands and ecological impact awareness

  • Risk assessment and risk–benefit analysis

  • Practical skills: safe tool use, fire lighting, shelter building, knot work, and more

  • Managing groups outdoors, supporting emotional resilience and wellbeing

Course Structure & Duration:

  • Blended format: Face-to-face training at Greenslate Farm + online support

  • 10 in-person days one week initial training and assessment week. You must attend both weeks to complete the qualification.

  • Week one – Monday 17th – 21st of November 2025 9:30-5pm 

  • Week two – Monday 20th – Friday 25th of September 9:30-5pm 

  • Portfolio and practical work to be completed over 9–12 months, easy to use online learning platform.

  • Work-based learning: You must run a 6-session Forest School programme as part of the qualification, you will need suitable insurance/DBS/equipment/access to site and groups. (We can support you with this).

Entry Requirements:

  • Aged 19 or over

  • Experience working with children or young people

  • Access to a suitable natural site for running sessions

  • Valid Level 3 Paediatric First Aid certificate (or willingness to complete it during the course)

  • Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check

What You’ll Receive:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Forest School Programme Leadership (AIM Accredited)

  • Personalised tutor support and mentoring

Neurodiversity and Learning Outdoors 

On this course we'll look at using the outdoors as a therapeutic, multi-sensory environment for children and young people with a range of SEND needs. Led by special educational needs teachers with forest school qualifications we'll be sharing the adaptations that can be made for children and young people as well as best practice to support children and young people with additional needs or disability to enhance their time outdoors and the learning experiences that this environment supports. 

Duration - 6 hours

Using the Outdoors as a Therapeutic Tool 

This course will take you through the mental health and wellbeing benefits of being outdoors as well as giving you the tools you need to use the outdoors as a therapeutic tool. We'll look at breathing, meditation, mindfulness practices and the different craft based activities that will enable you to support outdoor learning for all ages. Led by our forest school instructor, mental health first aider and with counsellor input including the research and science behind natural healing this course will be sure to inspire you!

Outdoor Sessions for Under Ones 

Our unique course looks at learning outdoors at the earliest opportunity. This course will support your understanding of child development in the first year of life, whilst including tools and techniques on nurturing and supporting parents and carers in their first years of parenting too. 

We will explore the logistics of taking babies outdoors, including clothing, additional equipment, health and safety considerations and risk assessments. We'll also look at ways of using the natural environment to support all areas of child development, whilst supporting parental mental health and wellbeing at the same time.

Health and Safety 

This course will take you through the health and safety implications of running sessions outdoors. 

We'll cover how to effectively risk assess the area, how to complete a dynamic risk assessment, weather warnings and useful apps and tech to have to support and inform your practice as well as providing useful templates and tools to use in your own settings. 

We'll also cover recording incidents, useful information when working outdoors and keeping yourself safe in all outdoor situations. 

This 2 hour course will keep you and those in your care safe.
